The mainstream support for Exchange Server 2010 was ended two years ago by Microsoft, which means individuals using Exchange 2010 stopped receiving any new updates for Exchange Server 2010. And many organisations are still relying on Exchange 2010 that is not beneficial for their business. So, if you want to enhance the benefits of Exchange Server, then it’s time to upgrade your business to Exchange 2016. There are many reasons to move to Exchange 2016, here we have tried to cover some of those reasons

  • Simplified Architecture of Exchange 2016

As you know Exchange is an email client, which is a core business service and needs to be run with hard-core reliability. The previous versions of Exchange Server don’t offer that reliability. However, Exchange 2016 has a simplified architecture that allows users to manage their emails easily with more reliability. Also, there are no dependencies between mailbox servers that will enable you to upgrade according to your business requirements.

  • Less Exchange Server Roles

As compared to Exchange 2010, Exchange 2016 offers more savings on disk as it has lower IO needs and doesn’t require RAID. There are only two server roles required in Exchange 2016 – Mailbox Server role and Edge Transport role. The mailbox server role handles all traditional client's access services and mailbox operations. The Edge transport role acts as a protector to minimize the attack surface of the Exchange.

  • Access to Outlook on the Web

The Outlook web app has now been replaced with Outlook on the Web, and many features of MS Outlook application has been added to Outlook on the Web. It means you can access almost every feature of your MS Outlook application from any browser on any device. Also, new features have been added to Outlook so that you can have a smooth experience while using it over the phone. Some other features like new themes, inline video, LinkedIn contact linking, etc. have also been added to it.

  • Improved Data Loss Prevention

This feature was first introduced with Exchange 2013 to secure the sensitive data from external attacks. With Exchange 2016, this feature has been improved up to 80 new conditional types. Some other improvements are notifying the user via a notification message about violating a transport rule. This advanced data loss prevention feature will help businesses identify any threats of data loss and prevent it from entering the Exchange environment.

  • Expanding Archives

In previous versions of Exchange, the archive mailbox size was only limited to 50 GBs. But, in Exchange 2016 if the archive mailboxes reach 50 GB, the archive mailbox expands. So, when an archive mailbox reaches the limit of 50 GB, a new archive mailbox will be automatically created and linked together to form a chain of mailboxes that will act as a logical mailbox. But, you need adequate storage to take advantage of this feature.

  • Managed Store

People who are using Exchange 2013 might be aware of the changes in the managed store. However, if you’re using Exchange 2010, then it’s worth noting. The Managed Store is the new process for the Microsoft Exchange Store Service and Worker.exe. It is written in C# and works with the replication service. It is also integrated with the Search feature that provides quick searching capabilities in the Exchange server.

Exchange Server Migration can be a crucial step for an organisation if they plan for it accordingly. Generally, migrating from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016 requires proper planning and an effective strategy. Apart from Exchange Server, moving to Exchange online can also be very beneficial for your business. It will give to access to multiple features of Office 365.
